Man Arrested In Knife Attack On Clerk

From Staff Reports

A 44-year-old man was arrested early Monday on charges that he attacked a convenience store clerk with a knife after being asked to leave the Coeur d’Alene business.

Stanley L. Toney, who told police he is a transient from Louisiana, was being held Monday in the Kootenai County Jail on one count of aggravated assault. Bail was set at $15,000.

Big Y Plaza Quick Stop clerk Robert Davies Jr. told police a man wearing Army-type fatigues and a red hat drew a knife when Davies asked him to leave the store. After throwing a cup of coffee on the floor, the man lunged at Davies with a 10-inch knife he pulled from a sheath hanging from his belt, according to a Coeur d’Alene police report.

The knife narrowly missed cutting Davies’ stomach, he said. Davies was not injured during the 1:25 a.m. attack.

Police arrested Toney as he walked into the woods east of the Interstate 90 overpass at Sherman Avenue. His clothing matched that worn by the man described in the attack on Davies.

The store clerk later identified Toney as his attacker, police said.

Toney had been inside the store for more than an hour when Davies asked him to leave because he needed to mop the floor, the report said. , DataTimes
