Bruins Want Suspension
The Boston Bruins asked the NHL to consider suspending Penguins forward Stu Barnes for a slash that broke the wrist of No. 1 overall draft pick Joe Thornton in an exhibition game.
Brian Burke, the league’s director of hockey operations, could not immediately be reached for comment. League spokesman Andy McGowan said, “The slash on Thornton is under review,”
Thornton, who is the key to the Bruins’ rebuilding plans and a marketing bonanza designed to revive interest in the franchise that finished with the NHL’s worst record last season, is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.
If Buffalo Sabres center Pat LaFontaine is bound for the New York Rangers in a trade, it won’t happen until at least Sunday.
A moratorium on trades took effect at 2 p.m. Wednesday in advance of the NHL’s waiver draft scheduled for this weekend. No deals may be made until after the draft ends Sunday afternoon.
