Franklin Kids Take Part In Chamber Meeting

Amy Scribner Staff writer

Wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the word “opportunity,” Franklin Elementary students escorted speakers across the stage at the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting Sept. 16.

“To be a part of this is really neat. The kids are really excited,” said teacher Niki Gadau as she and fellow teacher Joan Yake shepherded breathless fifth- and sixth-graders waiting in the wings at the Ag Trade Center last week.

Their presence was a perfect match, since much of the meeting - celebrating the chamber’s 100th year - focused on the chamber’s goals for the next century.

In class, students spend time each year constructing a time line of Spokane, studying the history of the city, then making their own predictions for the future.

Hutton Elementary students hope to be up to their knees in trash - the recyclable kind - when they stage their Recycling Days from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 3 and 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 4.

Community members are invited to drop off their aluminum cans, newspapers and magazines at the school during those hours. Glass and plastics will not be accepted.

“This is a great way for kids to raise money and to learn how to recycle,” said PTG member and project coordinator Mike Mullin.

The money will be added to the PTG general fund.

Free home pickup is also available by calling Mullin at 455-9010 by Friday.

Walk-a-thon to aid Crosswalk

LINKS, a group of local professional African-American women, will be hosting a walk-a-thon from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday beginning at Ferris High School.

Proceeds will benefit the Crosswalk program.

Open house will be tonight

Parents can experience a day in the life of their student at Cheney Middle School’s annual open house at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Parents will receive information regarding school programs and what to expect from each class in which their student is enrolled.

Officers from the parent advisory group will also be on hand.
