Bears Cash In On Hard Work CV Football Team Torpedoes Rogers Pirates With Impressive 47-14 Victory

Central Valley High School football coach Rick Giampietri was forced this year to become a taskmaster.

Heavy attention was placed on the Bears even before the season began and he didn’t want it to effect their performance.

“I tell ya,” said Giampietri, “I’ve worked them as hard as I have any team and it’s paying off.”

Obviously, from the way the team played Thursday night during a 47-14 victory over Rogers.

The Bears, favored by coaches to win the Greater Spokane League, are the complete package.

CV scored six touchdowns in the first half of a game for the second straight week. Stunned coaches never envisioned it happening.

“I thought we’d score on them,” said Giampietri, “but I didn’t figure the game would be this way.”

If there were any doubts about CV’s quickness, the game dispelled them. Their defense was stifling, the offense dominant.

Giampietri was unwilling to compare this team to the one that went unbeaten in 1995. So far statistically, the teams are similar even if the team makeup is different.

Tyree Clowe is a bigger, more powerful runner than Giorgio Usai. Against Rogers, Clowe ran whereever he wanted, ripping out of tackles and breaking free in the open field.

Clowe scored four touchdowns for the third straight week, including scores on runs of 29 and 52 yards. He now has 13 TDs in three games and has gained 467 yards.

“He’s faster than he (appears),” said Giampietri. “Pads don’t slow him down.”

Speedy quarterback Chad Adamson is not the drop-back style quarterback that R.J. Del Mese was. His is more a play action style that resulted in a roll out and cut back for 53 yards and a touchdown.

He also passed short, then went long to Todd Millar, 52 yards for another score. Adamson has completed 12 of 13 passes in his last two games.

“He’s our quickest player,” said Giampietri. “He threw the hitch well and threw deep well.”

On defense, Colin White and Brandon Bouge harried quarterback Rogers Brett Oglesbee. Pirate Mike Dorton, who was averaging 140 yards rushing per game, never found an opening until the second team came in after halftime.

“I thought he was going to go on one play and Nate McFarlane took his feet out,” said Giampietri. “It was a great open field tackle.”

The game also marked the return of CV middle linebacker Garret Graham who had chipped a bone in his foot against Ferris and missed last week’s game.

On Thursday night, Graham laid a ferocious lick on Dorton.

“You don’t realize the force that’s coming at you,” said Giampietri of his defenders. “I have to take them out of practice against the offense.”

Central Valley took advantage of two early Pirate mistakes to build a 21-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game. Rogers lost a lateral on its second play and Clowe went wide and untouched from the 11 on his first run.

“(Linemen) Ben Albers and Kris White just folded them in. Even at my old age I might have run that in,” said Giampietri.

In the second quarter the Bears came up with big plays on third down and scored three times from beyond midfield.

The ease of the win only means that Giampietri will be more demanding.

“Working a team hard is easier to do after a win. After a loss they think you’re punishing them,” said Giampietri. “In essence you’re trying to make them better, and with a win they accept it more.”

Particularly if it means more games like Thursday’s.
