Boggs’ Milestone Keys Yankees Win
Wade Boggs reached 2,800 career hits with an RBI triple and David Wells had a good audition for New York’s postseason rotation as the Yankees cruised past the Detroit Tigers 6-1 Saturday at Tiger Stadium.
Cecil Fielder added a three-run homer and Bernie Williams an RBI triple in New York’s fourth straight win. The Yankees have won nine straight at Detroit.
Rookie Jimmy Hurst’s first major-league homer gave the Tigers their only run in their fourth straight loss. The loss snuffed the last chance for the Tigers (79-82) to finish at .500.
Wells (16-10) got his second straight win after five consecutive losses. He allowed five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in seven innings.
Brian Moehler (11-12) took the loss.
Blue Jays 12, Red Sox 5
Toronto
Rich Butler had three hits, including his first major league RBI on a tiebreaking single in a four-run seventh inning as Toronto pounded Boston.
Boston rookie Nomar Garciaparra had three hits, including his 30th home run and seventh leading off a game to break Johnny Pesky’s club record for hits in a season by a rookie. He broke Pesky’s mark of 205 hits, set in 1943, with a second-inning double.

Cleveland
Pat Borders hit an RBI single in a six-run sixth inning as Cleveland beat Minnesota in the opener of a day/night doubleheader.
In the second game, Matt Lawton homered in the top of the 10th inning after Cleveland’s David Justice hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth as the Twins earned a split.

Chicago
Jeff King hit a grand slam to cap a six-run sixth inning as Kansas City beat Chicago for the first time in 11 games this season.
King finished with five RBIs, raising his total to 111. It was his second grand slam this season.

Milwaukee
Eric Davis homered for the first time since colon cancer surgery and Roberto Alomar overcame a 4-2 deficit with a three-run homer in the ninth off Doug Jones as Baltimore rallied past Milwaukee.
Angels 9, Rangers 8
Anaheim, Calif.
Tim Salmon singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and Robert Eenhoorn drove in four runs with a homer and a three-run double as Anaheim rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Texas.
Clearing the bases
Boston’s Garciaparra collected four at-bats to give him 678, the highest single-season total in club history. Jim Rice held the previous record of 677 at-bats in 1978. … Toronto’s Roger Clemens needs eight strikeouts to break his personal high of 291 set in 1988. … Brian Hunter will be the first Detroit Tiger to lead the majors in stolen bases since Ty Cobb in 1917. Hunter has (74) entering today’s season finale.
