Byu Escapes Against Smu
Brian McKenzie ran for five yards on each of Brigham Young’s first two plays in overtime, then weaved his way up the middle for a 15-yard touchdown that gave the No. 23 Cougars a 19-16 victory over Southern Methodist on Saturday.
The Mustangs tied the game at 13 on a 27-yard field goal by Roy Rios with 48 seconds left in the fourth quarter, then went ahead 16-13 on a 28-yarder by Rios in overtime. SMU missed a chance for a touchdown two plays earlier when Chris Sanders overthrew Rafiq Cooper in the end zone.
SMU (1-3, 0-1) last defeated a ranked team in 1986, the last season before the program received the NCAA “death penalty.”
