Let’s enjoy the Cougs

Why are putting down the Cougars and complaining about potholes the most important topics of conversation in this area?

Whether you think Washington State is an institution or an asylum, Mike Price a cheerleader or a coach, consider the momentous job it is to put together a respectable football program to be competitive in major college competition and be located in Eastern Washington.

Maybe we could hire a coach who uses us for a steppingstone (remind you of anyone?) and leaves after a couple of years or starts to wear purple and gold, jump on the bandwagon (the wheels are starting to come off) because rooting for an underdog is just too humiliating.

Whatever the answer is, wouldn’t it be better to enjoy the moment with the Cougs (let’s hold our breath)?

And all the while we can continue to bellyache about potholes! Ed Ellenz Spokane

Athletes first class

Classy, awesome, competitive, gutsy, cooperative and motivated. These are just a few of the adjectives that describe the athletes who competed in the Shadle Park Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday.

My hat’s off to these athletes who ran in this race. With so many teams and athletes - male and female - the meet was a success.

I was extremely impressed with the positive atmosphere and the desire to compete by all runners, not just the elite.

After each race, the runners were congratulating each other and asking about times. Not just of their own teammates, but of runners from other schools.

With sportsmanship at an all-time low, these runners proved the spirit of competition is still alive, and winning at all cost doesn’t matter as long as you strive for your own personal best.

Keep up the good work. Your efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Doug Bruketta Spokane

WCW fans disrespectful

I’m an 11-year-old boy and on Sept. 18, 1997, I went to World Championship Wrestling. I wanted to thank them for a good show, but what I really want is to say that the crowd was disrespectful.

Scott Hall and Kevin Nash got pop, beer and all kinds of stuff thrown on them by grownups. Alex Wright got spit on, cussed at, and popcorn thrown at him. I mean, would you like to get spit on?

They get paid to entertain people. I think some people need to realize that. Willie Horlen University Elementary student
