University Hopes Trip For TV Show Pays Off In Enrollment
When New York City residents wake up Oct. 12, they’ll see Marshall Drummond peering out from CBS-TV affiliate WCBS.
As a panelist on Edwin Newman’s Executive Forum Show, the president of Eastern Washington University also will be seen on stations in Los Angeles, Boston, Detroit, Houston, Eugene, Ore., and 42 other cities.
Eastern paid $23,800 to get Drummond onto the talk show hosted by Newman, a 78-year-old broadcaster. Another $1,500 was spent to cover Drummond’s expenses during a five-day trip to New York City to tape the program at HBO Studios, university records show.
Drummond says the deal was a steal for Eastern, which will net national publicity at a fraction of the cost of paid advertising.
“If we can enroll two students off that program, that will pay for the whole trip,” says Drummond. “If we get 20 students, I’m a genius!”
During Drummond’s appearance, the panel discussed how colleges are using online instruction to reach students. Officials from Oregon State University, Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Southwest Missouri State University also participated.
The Executive Forum segment will air in 48 cities, Oct. 12-18, according to the studio’s programming directory.
Eugene is the only Northwest city on the schedule. Many stations will show the program Sunday morning, though six will broadcast it during peak viewer hours of 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
