Lafontaine Traded

Compiled From Wire Services

Buffalo Sabres captain Pat LaFontaine was traded to the New York Rangers after disagreements between doctors over whether a concussion would end his career.

LaFontaine had been haggling with the Sabres for more than a month after two of his own doctors said he can play while Buffalo’s team physicians disagreed.

In exchange for LaFontaine, the Sabres will get a second-round draft pick in 1998 and future considerations.

The St. Louis Blues want to sign Brett Hull, just not on his terms.

Two days away from the season opener against Buffalo, management continued to have a problem with the star right wing’s demands. Hull, 34, wants $5 million a year for four or five years and the Blues, noting his age and declining production, have countered with $10 million for three years.

The NHL suspended Los Angeles Kings forward Matt Johnson for four games without pay and fined him $1,000 for slashing San Jose’s Todd Ewen in an exhibition game Sept. 24.

The Chicago Blackhawks assigned Ulf Dahlen to the International Hockey League’s Indianapolis Ice after the veteran left wing failed to register a point in five preseason games.
