Free Screening Offers Leg Pain Checkup
Spokane hospitals are offering a free health screening Friday for people 50 years and older who suffer from leg pain.
Leg cramps or pain can be caused by a circulatory condition called peripheral arterial disease - essentially hardening of the arteries in the legs.
The arteries become narrowed and restrict blood flow to the legs.
Symptoms of the disease include:
An ache, pain, cramp or tightness in the calves, thighs, hips or buttocks when walking.Pain that occurs at night or while at rest.
Pale or white skin on the foot or lower leg, coolness in one leg, or paralysis, numbness or tingling in the lower leg or foot.
The disease can be treated with changes in diet and exercise, but sometimes requires medications or surgery.
The screenings are scheduled Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Deaconess Medical Center, Holy Family Hospital, Sacred Heart Medical Center and Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
