Chiefs Oust Rockets From Playoffs

The Spokane Chiefs, all but given up for dead to start the week, will finish it in the Western Hockey League West Division semifinals.

The Chiefs moved into the second round Wednesday night, beating the Kelowna Rockets 5-1 in the Arena.

The Chiefs eliminated Kelowna four games to three and will open the best-of-5 division semifinals here Friday night against the Prince George Cougars. The second game is Sunday night.

The Chiefs will play in Prince George on Tuesday night and, if necessary, Wednesday night.

Marian Cisar and Cam Severson scored a pair of goals and goalie David Haun stopped 25 of 26 shots before 5,723.

The Chiefs got off to a quick start when Greg Leeb beat the Rockets to the puck in the corner to start the play that led to the first goal. Leeb backhanded to Trent Whitfield in the slot. Whitfield buried the shot 1:58 into the game.

Cisar put the Chiefs up 2-0, scoring on the rebound with Spokane on the power play.
