Central Valley Continues Finding Diverse Ways To Win

Central Valley continues to use every trick to stay in first place in Greater Spokane League baseball.

The Bears (5-1, 4-0) edged host Rogers 6-5 on Thursday by taking chances on the basepaths.

The game was tied at 5 in the sixth inning when Central Valley, with runners at the corners and two outs, appeared to have its runner at first base picked off. Rogers threw to second base, then changed tactics and attempted to get the CV runner breaking for home. The throw bounced short of the catcher, and the go-ahead run crossed.

Ben Miller doubled and tripled for Central Valley, which won its other GSL games with various styles: a shutout, a 10-run outburst, and a game-ending strikeout for a one-run edge.

Taylor West went 3 for 4 and Cameron Bowers (0-1) struck out seven for the Pirates (3-3, 2-2).

Other GSL scores were: Mead 13, Lewis and Clark 5; Ferris 5, Gonzaga Prep 4; North Central 5, Shadle Park 4; and University 12, Mt. Spokane 2.

At Hart Field, Sam Hess and Joe Chimienti provided the power, and Jeremy Winant (1-0) offered the relief as visiting Mead (4-2, 3-1) defeated Lewis and Clark (4-2, 2-2) to tie for second place. Chimienti’s two-run homer tied the game at 5 in the fifth, and Hess hit a solo shot in the sixth. Winant entered in the fourth and hurled four scoreless innings. Doug Adams homered for the Tigers.

At Ferris, Nick Bozo’s three-run homer to center field in the sixth completed a rally as the Saxons (4-2, 3-1) edged G-Prep (2-4, 2-2) after trailing 4-1. Ferris’ Josh Mills (3-0) struck out 12 and pitched a five-hitter.

At NC, Chris Blotsky singled with the bases loaded in the seventh as the Indians (2-3, 1-3) nipped Shadle (1-5, 0-4). NC’s John Forness (1-1) struck out eight in six innings.

At Mt. Spokane, Josh Sheffield drove in three runs with a homer and double, and Chris Barth (1-1) pitched five solid innings as University (2-4, 2-2) defeated the Wildcats (1-5, 1-3) in five innings. Sheffield had a two-run homer, his fourth, in the second and an RBI double in the third. The Wildcats’ Matt Binder had an RBI double in the third.

Sarah Babin had an RBI double in the fourth for a 2-0 lead, and Kaylene Fountain (3-2) outdueled Janessa Karstens (3-2) as host Lewis and Clark topped Mead 3-1 at Hart Field.

Fountain struck out five, Karstens six.

One-hitters ruled elsewhere in the GSL, where it was: Rogers 3, CV 1; Shadle 9, NC 3; U-Hi 10, Mt. Spokane 0; and Ferris 5, G-Prep 4.

At Rogers, Jamie Merrill (3-2) pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine as the Pirates (3-2, 3-1) defeated CV (2-4, 1-3). CV’s lone hit was Amber Shields’ homer in the fourth.

At NC, Juliana Cook hit her third homer in as many games, and Rachelle Stockman (1-1) and Jessica Murray combined on a one-hitter as Shadle (3-2, 3-1) defeated the Indians (0-5, 0-4). Cook finished 3 for 4, with three RBIs. Stacy Fisher had NC’s hit.

At Mt. Spokane, Cheryl Andrizzi (5-0) and Megan Owen combined on a one-hitter as U-Hi (5-1, 4-0) defeated the Wildcats (0-5, 0-4). Andrizzi struck out 10 in 4-1/3 innings.

At Ferris, Colleen Melody and Lindsey Tomlin hit back-to-back homers in the fifth, and Maria Ruddell added a two-run shot in the second as the Saxons (2-4, 2-2) defeated G-Prep (3-3, 2-2). Kylee Curry pitched a two-hitter, striking out four and walking none, and went 2 for 3.

Boys soccer

Marshall Wilson totaled two goals and one assist, and Brandon Bowman added two goals from beyond 18 yards as Medical Lake (1-2) defeated visiting Deer Park 5-1 in the GNL.
