Churches Plan Special Events, Services To Celebrate Easter

Today is Maundy Thursday and marks the beginning of three days of preparation for Easter Sunday. Many North Side churches are planning worship services and other special events for today, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Here are some of the plans:

North Addison Baptist Church, 6120 N. Addison, will present the drama “The Last Supper” at 7 p.m. Saturday. The performance will include 13 “frozen” men, and each disciple will come to life and share his thoughts about possibly being the one who will betray Christ. The performance is free and all are invited. Refreshments will be served following the presentation.

The church will also host a 6:30 p.m. worship service today.

Trinity United Methodist Church, 1725 E. Bridgeport, will have a communion service at 7 p.m. today. Church members will join the congregation of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1620 N. Monroe, for a worship service at noon on Friday.

Trinity will host an Easter sunrise service on the church lawn at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. The short service will be followed by an Easter breakfast from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Another worship service will follow at 10:30 a.m.

The Mead United Methodist Church, 2515 E. Farwell Road, will present the Crown of Thorns Choir at 7 p.m. Friday. Admission is free and all are invited.

The Easter celebration will begin with a sunrise worship service at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday. Breakfast will be served at 7:15 a.m. A contemporary worship service will be at 8:30 a.m. and an Easter egg hunt for children up to age 8 will follow. A traditional worship service will be held at 11 a.m.

St. Peter Lutheran Church, 4620 N. Regal, will host a worship service today at 7:30 p.m. The church will also have a service at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

St. Peter will have Easter worship services at 8 and 10:45 a.m. on Sunday. A buffet breakfast will be served at 9:30 a.m. A free-will offering will be collected and all proceeds will be used to purchase educational material for the church.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3909 W. Rowan, will host a foot-washing worship service today at 7 p.m. All those who want to participate in the foot washing may do so.

The church will also have a 7 p.m. service on Friday. The Tenebrae service will be based on Christ’s seven words from the cross. Tenebrae is the Latin word for darkness.

Prince of Peace will celebrate Easter with worship services at 7:30, 9:15 and 11 a.m. on Sunday. The services will feature the junior and senior choirs, as well as a trumpet duo. There will be no Sunday school classes this week.

St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2159 N. Hamilton, will have worship services at 7 p.m. today and Friday. An Easter breakfast will be served from 8 to 9:30 a.m. A free-will offering will be collected. St. Paul’s Easter service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. There will be no Sunday school classes this week.

Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church, 4449 N. Nevada, will host short worship services at 12:15 p.m. today and Friday. In addition, a special communion service will be held at 7 p.m. today.

An Easter breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. A free-will offering will be collected to help offset the cost of the meal. The Easter worship service will follow at 10:30 a.m.

Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, 312 W. Hawthorne Road, will host a special worship service at 7 p.m. today. The service will include a reenactment of the Last Supper and foot washing for those who want to participate. The church will also host an ecumenical worship service from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday.

Easter worship services will be held at 9 and 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary on Sunday. Additional services will be at 8:30, 10 and 11:15 a.m. in Quall Hall.

Salem Lutheran Church, 1428 W. Broadway, will host worship services at 7 p.m. today and Friday. Easter will be celebrated with a sunrise service at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and the main worship service at 10:30 a.m. A free breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m.

Messiah Lutheran Church will have a worship service at 7 p.m. on Friday. Easter will be celebrated with worship services at 8:15 and 11 a.m. on Sunday. An Easter breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 N. Gleneden Drive, will host a communion service at 7 p.m. today. Easter will be celebrated with a sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. Sunday on the grounds of St. George’s school, 2929 W. Waikiki Road. Those attending are asked to bring folding chairs.

Additional worship services will be held at Covenant at 8:30 and 11 a.m. on Sunday. The community is invited to attend a free breakfast, which will be served from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

Fellowship Church of God, 5220 N. Crestline, will host an Easter worship service at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Activities for children will take place during the service.

The church will also serve a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The free meal is available to people who live in the neighborhood enclosed by Market and Nevada Streets and Wellesley and Francis Avenues.

North Hill Christian Church, 4620 N. Post, will host a free supper at 6:30 p.m. today. A re-enactment of the Last Supper will take place during the meal.

North Hill will celebrate Easter with a contemporary worship service at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday followed by a traditional service at 11 a.m.

Country Homes Christian Church, 8415 N. Wall, will host a communion service today at 7 p.m. Those attending the special service will sit at tables in groups of 12, with an empty chair representing Jesus’ presence. The service will use Luke’s Gospel of the Last Supper.

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall, will host a worship service at 7 p.m. today. The service will include communion and the stripping of the altar. The Emmaeus Road Company, the church’s drama group, will present a dramatic presentation based on Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting about the Last Supper.

St. David’s will celebrate Easter with worship services at 8 and 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. Chelan, will serve a light dinner at 6:30 p.m. today. The meal will be followed by a communion service.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7307 N. Nevada, will host a 7 p.m. worship service today. Additional Holy Week services will be at noon and 7 p.m. on Friday.

Holy Cross will celebrate Easter will a sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday and services at 8 and 11 a.m. Church members will serve breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the meal.

The music and drama department of the First Church of the Open Bible, 8303 N. Division, will present a special sermon titled “Easter, a Walking Tour” at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services on Sunday.

New Hope Bible Church, 2804 E. Euclid, will host guest speaker Jason Nightingale at the 7 p.m. worship service on Friday. He will also speak at 7 p.m. on Saturday and during the Easter service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Nightingale is on staff at the Northwest Baptist Seminary in Tacoma and founded the Panther Gap Mission Farm in Northern California.
