State Commission Oks Mops Changes

From Staff

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission Wednesday approved revisions to a plan to offer customers alternative sources of energy.

The plan, called More Options for Power Service II, or MOPS II, is offered by Washington Water Power Co. to 2,256 residential and commercial customers in Deer Park, and also to 5,570 customers in Hayden Lake, Idaho. The plan allows customers to choose wood power or wind power instead of traditional service for about a dollar a month extra.

Revisions approved Wednesday allow participating customers to choose whether all or one-quarter of their power comes from wood or wind sources. WWP also will cap the monthly and annual market rates at about 10 percent above WWP’s traditional rate. And the “green power” alternative service will be offered July 1, instead of May 1 as previously planned.

The Commission also delayed action until its April 22 meeting on a request by US West to offer high-speed digital subscriber lines for home Internet access.

The Washington Association of Internet Service Providers asked the commission for language requiring US West to inform customers about Internet service providers other than its own ISP.
