Timberwolves Cool Down Vikings

Lake City put a chill on the otherwise warm and undefeated league season of the Coeur d’Alene boys soccer team Tuesday.

And it was LC’s defense that supplied the ice in a 5-1 North Idaho League rout that pushed the visiting Timberwolves’ record to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the NIL.

The Viks slipped to 6-4 overall and 6-1-1 in league after being frosted early and often.

Sixteen minutes after the playing of the bagpipes that kicks off each match between the rival schools, LC scored its first goal.

A back pass from junior midfielder Connor Quinn gave Brent Wolf possession for the T-Wolves. Wolf tried a cross pass from the left side of the goal box. However, the ball ricocheted back to him and he dribbled to the center and scored from about 10 yards out on goalie Barret Schwerin.

“It’s really hard (for teams) to keep their heads up after quick goals,” Lake City coach Jim Facciano said. “We try to come out strong and set the pace.”

The pace was set.

LC scored twice more in the first half, the second goal coming at the 23-minute mark and the third just 3 minutes later.

Junior Philimon Tudor scored the second goal. Quinn supplied the pass. Tudor dribbled a few steps and kicked a ground-skimming, right-footer into the left side of the goal. It went untouched by Schwerin.

“I was very surprised they let us score those first two goals by dribbling up to shoot,” Facciano said. “(I think) it surprised them, too.”

Schwerin faced nine attempts by the T-Wolves in the first half.

Lake City’s most spectacular goal came 3 minutes after Tudor’s score. A bicycle kick by Carmine Terracciano set up junior Sam Stroh, who dribbled to the left endline and booted an off-angle kick. The ball skimmed the nearest goal bar and sneaked into the right corner to put the T-Wolves up 3-0.

Minutes following intermission, Stroh served up a short, corner-kick assist to Terracciano, who scored from beyond the 18-yard mark.

CdA scored its lone goal 23 minutes into the second half on a direct kick by Kyle Chambers from 8 yards out.

The Viks had one more serious scoring threat, but LC sophomore goalie Seth Winters, who was making his first varsity start, made a diving, one-handed save.

Winters started because LC’s first- and second-string goalies were out with sickness and injury, respectively.

Terracciano scored his second goal in the final minutes on a direct kick from inside the goal box.

Baseball

The Coeur d’Alene Vikings swept the Sandpoint Bulldogs 7-5, 3-2, in an Inland Empire League doubleheader at CdA.

The Viks completed the sweep with some late-game heroics in the second game.

David Seccombe hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth to score pinch-runner Bret Whiteman with the winning run. An inning earlier, Kirk Gosch’s sacrifice fly with one out forced the extra inning.

In the first game, Jim Rupp hit a leadoff homer to spark a three-run fourth inning. Rob Crain’s two-run double finished the scoring.

CdA moved to 4-2 in league, 7-7 overall. Sandpoint fell to 3-2, 8-4.

Post Falls upset previously unbeaten Lewiston 11-5 in the opening game of an IEL doubleheader at Brett James Memorial Field, but the second game was called because of darkness with the score tied 5-5.

The Trojans’ Scott Klaudt hit a two-run single to provide the winning run in the opener.

Post Falls forced the tie in the second game behind two homers from Josh Mann.

The Trojans leveled their league record at 3-3 and moved to 5-4 overall. Lewiston is 4-1, 10-2.

In a non-league game at Cheney that featured a football-like final score, the Blackhawks outslugged visiting Lake City 20-15.

LC (2-9) took a 9-3 lead into the bottom of the second inning only to watch Cheney score 10 runs on six hits with two outs. The Timberwolves committed three errors in the inning.

Trailing 14-9, LC pulled within one when Chad Keefer hit a grand slam in the fourth.

Visiting Lakeland remained undefeated in Intermountain League play with a 10-1 victory over Bonners Ferry.

Right-handed senior pitcher Kurt Reese (4-0) moved his unblemished career record to 25-0. Reese also was productive at the plate for the Hawks (3-0, 8-1) with three hits and two RBIs. Teammate Taylor Skidmore also had three hits and two RBIs.

Rama Scarlett had two hits for the Badgers (1-5, 5-6).

St. Maries handled Priest River 13-3 in a run-rule shortened IML game at St. Maries.

Brian Lousbury led the Lumberjacks (3-1, 7-5) with a pair of two-run homers. Matt Hanson added a three-run homer in the third.

Zach Wood had two hits for the Spartans (1-4, 3-8).

In a non-league game at West Valley, Moscow (8-5) scored six runs in the final two innings to down the Eagles 11-6.

Jeff McPhie led Moscow with three hits. Jeff Carr’s bases-loaded single scored the go ahead runs for the Bears in the sixth inning.

Softball

A pair of Coeur d’Alene pitchers each tossed no-hitters to lead the Vikings to convincing 21-1, 15-0 Inland Empire League victories over visiting Sandpoint in games shortened by the 10-run rule and darkness.

A 17-run first-inning outburst provided plenty of offense for CdA pitcher Blake Hoorelbeke in the opener as she struck out six.

CdA (4-2, 7-6) sent 22 players to the plate in the first inning, and the Viks scored 16 of their 17 runs with two outs. Sandpoint committed no errors in the inning.

Seila Laititi held Sandpoint (0-4, 0-12) hitless in four innings in the second game that was called because of darkness. Megan Hull and Patti Stranger each had three RBIs in the second game.

Lakeland romped past the Badgers 30-0 in an Intermountain League softball game at BF.

Six Hawks had thre RBIs apiece as Lakeland improved to 4-0 in league, 8-2 overall.

Tennis

Lake City topped West Valley 5-2 in a girls match at WV.

LC’s No. 1 singles player Char Kasner led with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tiffany Miner.

At East Valley, Coeur d’Alene’s girls downed the Knights 6-1.

The Viks’ doubles of Abby and Leslie Davis handled Tammy Hill and Lisa Werner in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3.

Soccer

In a North Idaho League match at Moscow, the Bears ran over visiting Lewiston 5-1.

Jared Vreeland had two goals and an assist for Moscow (4-2-1, 6-2-2). Lewiston fell to 1-7-1, 1-8-1.
