Ten years ago: The Palestine Liberation Organization accused Israel of assassinating Khalil al-Wazir, a top PLO military figure, in Tunisia. Palestinians reacted angrily, and at least 14 were shot and killed by Israeli troops during clashes in the occupied Gaza Strip and West Bank.
Five years ago: At the White House, President Clinton pressed Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa to help ease Japan’s persistent trade surplus with the United States.
One year ago: Police in Israel recommended indicting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for breach of trust in an influence-trading scandal. (Prosecutors later decided not to pursue charges against Netanyahu, citing a lack of proof.)
