Hess Keeps Hex On Gsl Pitchers

Greater Spokane League pitchers are 0 for 8 against Mead’s Sam Hess this week.

Hess went 4 for 4, with a double and his third home run, as the Panthers (8-2, 7-1) defeated host Shadle Park 16-5 Thursday to remain tied for first place with Ferris.

Hess, who hit a solo homer during a six-run sixth inning, also homered Tuesday when he went 4 for 4 against Gonzaga Prep. He is 20 for 25 (.800) against GSL pitching.

Neil Logue (3-0) struck out seven in five innings for the Panthers, who host Central Valley (6-2 GSL) today. Mead has won seven straight since a 12-5 loss to Ferris.

Chet Womach hit a three-run homer in the sixth for the Highlanders (3-7, 2-6).

Elsewhere, Jared Wilson and Ben Miller had back-to-back doubles during a 10-run second as visiting Central Valley (7-3 overall) defeated Mt. Spokane 16-6. Wilson also singled and tripled, and had three RBIs to support Nick Ostrom (2-0), who struck out eight. Matt Binder of the Wildcats (1-9, 1-7) had a three-run home run in the second.

Josh Mills (5-0) threw a complete-game, five-hitter, striking out 12, as Ferris (8-2, 7-1) recorded a 5-1 victory over Lewis and Clark (6-4, 4-4) at Hart Field. Joe Moll’s first home run, a two-run shot in the fifth, gave Ferris a 5-0 lead.

Chris Barth ended the game with five scoreless innings and Brad Valkenaar hit a two-run homer in the fourth as University (5-5, 5-3) defeated visiting North Central 8-3 to take over fourth place. Rusty Davis’ two-run double in the fifth completed the scoring. Aaron Farr tripled for the Indians (3-6, 2-6).

David Sullivan hit for the cycle, including his first homer, and he and Sean Thacker stole four bases apiece as host G-Prep (4-6, 4-4) raced by Rogers 15-9. Sullivan had four RBIs. The Bullpups stole 15 bases. Freshman Chad Krebs had four hits for the Pirates (3-7, 2-6).

GSL softball

Rachae Bertholf, 0-6 entering the game, threw a five-inning no-hitter as North Central (1-7, 1-6) defeated visiting Mt. Spokane (2-6, 2-5) 10-0.

Stacey Fisher singled and tripled in runs during NC’s eight-run first. Amanda Chase added a two-run double and Donna Reynolds a two-run single in the first.

Elsewhere, Janessa Karstens struck out eight in three innings and hit a homer, her third in two games, as Mead (7-2, 5-2) defeated visiting G-Prep (3-6, 2-5) 13-0 to remain in second place. Mackenzie Stewart and Deanna Karstens had two RBIs apiece for the Panthers.

Rachelle Stockman pounded a two-run double in the seventh as visiting Shadle Park (5-3, 5-2) defeated Rogers 2-0 to knock the Pirates (4-4, 4-3) out of the second-place deadlock. Stockman (2-1) pitched a three-hitter in her first start in two weeks.

First-place U-Hi (8-1, 7-0) knocked visiting Lewis and Clark (4-4, 4-3) down a notch with a 4-1 victory. Cheryl Andrizzi (8-0) struck out 10. Vanessa Shelton, Nicki Meyer and Megan Owen all went 2 for 3 and scored a run.

Jill Boardman singled in the Tigers’ run in the seventh.

Lindsey Tomlin tripled in one run and Kylee Curry struck out six as Ferris (3-6, 3-4) notched a 5-1 victory at CV (3-6, 2-5). Ferris scored three in the fifth, helped by four CV errors.

GSL girls golf

Shadle’s Kelly McGinnis had a hole-in-one on the 12th hole during a three-way match at Esmeralda Golf Course. McGinnis used a 9-iron on the 95-yard par 3.
