Spokane Junior Rifle Member Makes Development Team

Hattie Ponti of the Spokane Junior Rifle Team earned a spot on the National Development Team for the first time by her performance in the National Rifle Matches at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Ponti, 16, who lives in Athol, Idaho, was first in the intermediate junior women’s class and second overall among all the women under 19 who shot to qualify for the training team that leads to the Olympic team.

Two other Spokane Junior Rifle Team members also shot well. Craig Kingsbury was fourth in the sub-junior men’s class and Jordan Breshears was 12th in the intermediate junior men’s class.

Baseball

The Inland Empire Baseball Umpire’s Association is recruiting umpires for summer leagues that include American Legion, Pony, two men’s adult leagues and one at Eastern Washington University.

The IEBUA has a development and training program for transfers and beginning umpires.

The Cheney Baseball Association will hold its fifth annual pancake breakfast Saturday from 5-11 a.m. in the auditorium at Cheney City Hall, 609 Second St.

Tickets for $4 can be purchased at the door. The event, sponsored by the Cheney Kiwanis, is a fund-raiser for the city’s summer baseball programs.

Bicycling

Spokane cyclist Chris Vogel set a 1-kilometer time trial record at the Harry Jerome Sports Center Velodrome in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Vogel, who has competed in the U.S. National championships, finishing as high as seventh, raced the 47-degree banked track in 1:14.5, knocking .5 off the record at the year-old track.

Bowling

With two weeks to go in the Idaho State Men’s Tournament in Ontario, Ore., North Idaho entries lead two divisions.

Ryan Knieriem of Lewiston-Clarkston-Orofino is the A scratch all-events leader at 2,143 and is second in the A handicap all-events with a 2,251. And Lucky Star Satellite of Grangeville leads the B team handicap division with a 3,601.

Rufus Harris of Moscow has high game with his first 300.

College scene

Central Washington junior Marci Meddock of Spokane (Mead), a transfer from Community Colleges of Spokane, leads the Wildcats softball team in hitting and ranks second in the Pacific Northwest Athletic Conference with a .443 average.

Community Colleges of Spokane record-holder Kristen Peterson of Bellingham, a senior at Eastern Oregon College, won the NAIA Indoor women’s pole vault with a meet-record 11 feet, 6-1/4 inches. Her CCS mark is 9-6.

Jen Harrell of Spokane (Gonzaga Prep) continues to put her name in the record book at Dickinson College. The junior sprinter ran a leg on the 4x100-meter relay team that broke an 11-year-old school record with a time of 50.49 seconds. The old mark was 50.6.

Wheaton College baseball captain Todd Kinley of Spokane continues to enjoy a banner senior season. He hit his first home run, the second of his career, during a 10-for-30 streak that has raised his batting average to .300.

Football

A three-day tryout for the Sea Gals, the Seattle Seahawks’ sideline dance group, begins Saturday at the Kingdome. Registration is at 9 a.m.

Tryouts continue April 27 and 29.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and no longer registered as a full-time secondary student and must show photo identification.

Miscellany

The 17th annual Killin Weekend at Eastern Washington University, sponsored by Rosauers, is slated for May 8-9.

The weekend includes the 11th annual coaches golf tournament, scrimmages by the Eagles’ football and volleyball teams and the Killin dinner-dance that raises funds for the Orland Killin Academic Scholarship Fund as well as athletic scholarships.

Featured on the dinner menu are lobster tail and chicken breast. Cost is $40, with a reserved table for 10 going for $400.

The golf tournament is May 8 at The Fairways. Cost is $50, which includes greens fees and a post-tournament party among other things.

Eastern’s defending Big Sky Conference football and volleyball squads will be in action May 9. The Red-White spring football game takes place at 2 p.m. at Woodward Stadium with the varsity-alumni volleyball match at 3.
