The country’s three tallest buildings have joined the energy conservation movement.

Managers of the Sears Tower in Chicago and both the World Trade Center and the Empire State Building in New York City are joining a government program to cut energy consumption.

More than 6,500 windows in the Empire State Building have been replaced with double-paned windows; 23,000 light figures have been upgraded to include energy-saving bulbs at the World Trade Center; and more efficient lighting and climate control equipment has been installed in the Sears Tower.

Commercial buildings account for 19 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, mainly carbon dioxide, through their energy use, according to the experts.
