Long Way From Home

A confused pelican has turned up in the village of Trysil, Norway, more than 1,200 miles north of its typical habitat. The perplexed bird is getting celebrity treatment in the tiny mountain town, where residents have gathered to watch and photograph it as it perches atop a telephone pole. “This is an out-and-out sensation,” Jostein Sandvik of the Norwegian Ornithological Association said. “As far as I can tell, this is a white pelican, and only one has previously been observed in Norway.” Sandvik said the bird has a good chance of survival if it can figure out which way is south.
