Ewu Pair Honored For Prison Work

From Staff Reports

FOR THE RECORD (April 25, 1998): Headline wrong: Derek Strey and Kori L. Miller were honored for their volunteer work with the Department of Corrections. A headline in Friday’s paper incorrectly indicated they worked inside prisons.

NFL hopeful Derek Strey and fellow Eastern Washington University intern Kori L. Miller were named top volunteers by the state Department of Corrections on Thursday.

Miller was named Volunteer of the Year in this Northeast region for continuing to volunteer two days a week after her 400-hour internship ended.

Strey received the George Stearns Memorial Award for completing a 400-hour internship in the midst of the EWU Eagles’ 1997 winning football season. A lineman and defensive captain, Strey is headed to training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He worked with community corrections officer Joe Hancock, who supervises gang members. Miller worked with CCO Luann Kawata, who supervises sex offenders. The two interns accompanied officers, interviewed offenders, made referrals and handled paperwork.

At a luncheon Thursday, state officials honored 1,289 volunteers who contribute more than 14,585 hours to community corrections, Pine Lodge Pre-release, work release and field offices, said Alice Watts, who supervises community involvement in this region at the Department of Corrections.
