UI Hires Assistant From Jc

Steve Forbes has joined the University of Idaho men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.

Forbes, 33, previously was head coach at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan., compiling a 68-28 record the last three seasons, 29-4 last winter.

“He brings a plethora of knowledge and skill, especially in the areas of relationships towards our future recruiting,” said UI head coach David Farrar.

Forbes earned his bachelor of science degree in secondary education from Southern Arkansas in 1988. He and his wife, Johnetta, have two children, Elizabeth and Christopher.

Kellogg names coach

Tim Kimberling has been named head football coach at Kellogg High School, replacing Tony Kerfoot.

Kerfoot, also the head boys basketball coach, was head coach for a year. He resigned because the duties of both sports were too demanding.

Kimberling was an assistant under Kerfoot and Shawn Amos, the Coeur d’Alene coach and Kerfoot’s predecessor.

Vandals football scrimmage

Idaho’s second spring football scrimmage will be held today at 10 a.m. in the Kibbie Dome. It is free and open to the public.

The Vandals wrap up spring practice next week with the annual Silver and Gold game Friday at 7 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome.

The 1988 Big Sky Conference championship team will be honored at that game. The Silver and Gold game and the annual golf tournament the following day is scheduled to bring in former Vandals greats Jerry Kramer, Wayne Walker and John Friesz and ex-coach Keith Gilbertson, now an assistant with the Seattle Seahawks.

Tee times remain for the golf tournament. Included in the $70 entry fee are a shirt, lunch, dinner, prizes and greens fees. During dinner, there will be an auction of Vandals memorabilia conducted by Bob Curtis, radio voice of the Vandals.

NIC baseball bounced

North Idaho College got home runs from Chris Florko and Mike Dorame, but the solo shots weren’t near enough for the Cardinals to offset a 14-hit College of Southern Idaho assault as the Eagles hammered the Cardinals 14-6 in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Adam Manley was 4 for 5 with three runs scored and Craig Mosher struck out seven Cardinals in a 10-hit complete game in the first of four games between the schools.

NIC’s baseball game scheduled for Tuesday with University of British Columbia has been canceled at the request of the Canadian team.

NIC softball team loses two

Crystal Reese hit home runs in both ends of a Region 18 doubleheader as Colorado Northwestern swept visiting North Idaho College 7-5, 7-6 in Rangely, Colo.

NIC tied the score at 6 in the second game before the hosts pushed across the winning run in the fifth.

Angie Tweedy went 3 for 4 and Laura Tolzmann had two doubles for NIC in the second game in which the Cardinals outhit the winners 12-6. Three NIC players had two hits in the first game.

College track

About 150 athletes from the Northwest are expected to compete Sunday in the McDonald’s/Vandal Outdoor Track and Field Meet at the Dan O’Brien Complex near the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho.

Field events begin at 8 a.m., running events at 1:45 p.m.

Cards sign wrestler

North Idaho College has signed a wrestling recruit - two-time Montana state champion Trevor Florchinger. He’s expected to wrestle at 142 pounds.

UI tennis team loses

UC Irvine ended the University of Idaho women’s season with a 5-2 win at the Big West Championships at Ojai, Calif., on Friday

UC Irvine, the No. 3 seed, advances to the fifth-place consolation title match.

Georgina Whittem (No. 2 singles) and Erin Wentworth (No. 1 singles) each scored victories for seventh-seeded Idaho. Whittem beat Natalie Exon 6-2, 6-2, while Wentworth beat Liz Yom 6-1, 6-1.

LC boys soccer wins

Philimon Tudor scored 4 minutes into the match and assisted on the final goal as visiting Lake City (15-0, 11-0) defeated Moscow 4-1 in a North Idaho League match.

Tudor led Taylor Facciano at 54 minutes for a goal that took persistence. Facciano had two shots blocked before hitting.

The Bears are 8-3-2, 6-3-1.
