Dollar Rises Against Mark, Yen

The dollar edged higher against the mark Wednesday as German central bankers seemed to differ in their views about raising interest rates.

The dollar also rose slightly against the yen as comments by Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin were interpreted to mean there will be no coordinated intervention to prop up the Japanese currency.

Analysts said that the dollar benefitted from reports that European powers seemed to be ending their squabble over who would be president of the central bank being created at the launch of the euro, Jan. 1.
