Loon Lake Fire Bond Rejected

From Staff Reports

A $2.4 million bond measure was resoundingly defeated Tuesday in the Loon Lake-based fire district that serves the southern end of Stevens County.

The Fire District 1 measure had 38.6 percent support at the polls, 492-817, and needed 60 percent to pass. Even if all 608 absentee ballots issued in the district were returned with yes votes, the proposal still wouldn’t pass.

District officials said the money was needed to build and renovate stations and to replace trucks.

A group called Citizens for a Quality, Cost Effective Fire District agreed that many of the improvements are needed, but argued the district could afford them from its regular tax receipts if it hadn’t hired three full-time administrators.
