In 1790: The Coast Guard was founded as the Revenue Cutter Service.
In 1862: The first federal income tax was collected to pay for the rising cost of the Civil War.
In 1944: Nazi police raided a building in Amsterdam and arrested eight people, including 15-year-old Anne Frank. While she was hiding in a secret annex of the building with her family, she kept a diary. She died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, but her diary was published after the war and became a best-seller.
In 1966: John Lennon claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ. His statement set off a furor and led to many stations banning Beatles records.
