Dollar Rises Against Yen

The dollar rose against the yen Monday but its gains were limited by fears of intervention by Japanese financial authorities.

The dollar fell against the German mark during lackluster trading punctuated by the Bank of Canada’s intervention to prop up its faltering currency and the fall of the Mexican peso to a low for the year.

The dollar rose against the yen during Asian and early European trading as opposition parties in Japan called on Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi to hold elections. Obuchi’s critics fear he will not move quickly enough to enact badly needed economic reforms.
