Ten years ago: The controversial movie “The Last Temptation of Christ,” directed by Martin Scorsese, opened in nine cities despite objections by some Christians who felt the film was sacrilegious.

Five years ago: President Clinton signed a relief package for the flooded Midwest. Clinton also lifted a ban on rehiring air traffic controllers fired for going on strike in 1981. The launch of space shuttle Discovery was scrubbed at the last second.

One year ago: Steel workers approved a contract ending a 10-month strike against Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. A flash flood in Arizona’s Lower Antelope Canyon claimed the lives of 11 hikers.
