The Colville Confederated Tribes wants public comment on its intention to seek authorization from the federal government to administer and enforce the Tribe’s Toxic Lead (Pb) Program. If the request for local control of the program is turned down, the Environmental Protection Agency will run the program. It’s the closest thing to the big leagues most of these guys will ever see. The Columbia Basin Riverdogs Senior Babe Ruth team clocked their rival, Ryder Construction, 9-1 for a trip to the World Series in North Carolina on Saturday. “We didn’t have a big party or anything.
We’re saving it for the big one,” says manager Jerry Thaut. This will be the Riverdogs’ first shot at the title.

Creston
Due to a discrepancy between the amount of water pumped from the wells and the amount of water the city is billing residents for, the City of Creston has been given an ultimatum. The State Auditor’s Office has required the town to implement a water meter replacement program. The town will check every meter, and if an error of 2 percent or more is found, the property owner must replace the meter at a cost of $100. The council is discussing whether the city should pick up the initial cost of new meters and bill citizens $1.50 monthly until the units are paid for.

Selkirk
With neighbors upset about a rash of wild animal sightings and a recent cougar attack at a popular camground, local officials have scheduled a meeting to listen to public concerns. The Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Department and officials from the state Fish and Wildlife Department will hear comments Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Selkirk School gymnasium. All are invited to share concerns and discuss solutions.

Spangle
The Liberty School District is seeking bidders for the $3.1 million renovations to Liberty High School. Renovations include four new classrooms, a new music multipurpose area, remodeling of the science classroom and conversion of the former music room into a library. It will also include a wastewater treatment plant for the school district, said Superintendent Skip Berquam. The school board will review bids at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 in the high school cafeteria.

Hunters
The annual Hunters Fair is scheduled Saturday. Grand marshals for the parade this year are Joe and Mary Hudspeth of Fruitland. Holding court over the festivities will be princesses Suzanne Schrack, Mindy Budweg and Holly Hemler. All are students at Columbia-Hunters High School.

The Pullman Memorial Hospital Board of Commissioners approved a bond proposal of $11.8 million Tuesday to be put to Whitman County voters Nov. 3. The bond is the next step toward building a new hospital on Bishop Boulevard, said Scott Adams, Pullman Memorial Hospital administrator.

Youth Associate Mary Jean Craig of the Idaho 4-H office in Moscow will speak at noon today during the Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Several participants of the 4-H organization, as well as students enrolled in the “Know Your Government” program will attend the meeting at St. Maries Eagles. The public is encouraged to attend. The Unicorn Theatre Players will host auditions for their production of “The Real Inspector Hound” on Aug. 24 and 25. The Moscow High School band has been invited to participate in the London Parade Festival on Jan. 1, 2000.
The eight-day trip will cost $1,645 per student. The band is starting a series of fund-raising activities to help pay the way of at least 32 band members. A yard sale and car wash are scheduled for Saturday in the high school parking lot.

The Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District opened a preferred woodcutting section in the AlderDeer Creek area located along Road 1586. The section is scheduled to be open until Oct. 10, although it may close ahead of schedule without advanced notice. Black bear hunting licenses for the 1998 fall season will not be sold after Aug. 31. The license deadlines have been instituted to reduce illegal hunting of bears.
Nonresident hunters can contact the Fish, Wildlife & Parks at (406) 444-2535 to request license applications by mail. The 1998 fall season begins on Sept. 15 in most hunting districts.
