Couple Charged With Check Forgery

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Valley woman and an Usk, Wash., man Saturday for check forgery. The checks, according to police reports, had been in outgoing mail stolen from a Valley mailbox earlier that day.

Deputies arrested Dana R. Faydo, 35, of 2300 N. Park Road, on a forgery charge. Kevin J. Corning, 40, of Usk, was arrested on charges of forgery and possession of a controlled substance believed to be cocaine.

The arrests wouldn’t have happened, police officials said, if the victims hadn’t reported the mail theft so quickly. They saw a man take the mail out of their mailbox and drive away in a Mustang, deputies said. They called Crime Check immediately and drove to Farmers and Merchants Bank to report three checks stolen.

At about 3 p.m., a teller at Farmers and Merchants at Sprague Avenue and Argonne Road called sheriff’s deputies to tell them a man and woman were in the drive-through, trying to cash one of the stolen checks for $80. The name and dollar amount apparently had been altered.

While the teller stalled them, the couple got suspicious and drove away. They left behind the woman’s ID.

Deputies stopped the car at Park Road and Broadway Avenue and arrested the man and woman inside, according to police reports. They used the ID to identify the female suspect. One of the mail theft victims identified the man as the person she saw taking items out of her mailbox.

The mail theft information has been forwarded to federal authorities.
