Wave System Planned For Shadle Pool
Spokane is making waves.
The City Council on Monday approved purchase of a wave system for Shadle Park’s indoor swimming pool.
It’s Spokane’s first wave pool.
The MaxaWave system creates undulating waves in regular swimming pools, like waves across a lake.
“It looks like it will be a wonderful addition to our program,” said Hal McGlathery, the city’s recreation services division manager.
“This is especially relevant for Spokane. We can simulate conditions at our local lakes. It is more realistic,” said McGlathery. It prepares swimmers and boaters for lakelike conditions.
It will be used to realistically teach lifesaving techniques and scuba diving, as well as triathlon and kayak training.
But on the fun side, the wave system adds a neat twist to an afternoon at the neighborhood pool. Swimmers jump and dive into thick waves rippling across the pool like a gentle ocean surf.
The MaxaWave pump is expected to be installed and running by the end of the year.
The swimming pool is located at Shadle Park High School and is operated through a joint agreement with School District 81. It’s the only indoor pool run by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department and is open year-round.
The machine costs $58,680.
