Drinking, Careless Drivers To Be Targeted

The Spokane County Sheriff’s traffic unit, reinforced with extra deputies working outside their normal patrol hours, will target drinking and careless drivers on U.S. Highways 395 and 2 in north Spokane County this weekend.

Troopers from the Washington State Patrol will also participate in the DUI-Oriented Traffic Stops.

Cost for additional officers was paid for by a grant from the state, according to sheriff’s spokesman Dave Reagan.

Working in teams of two, officers will use radar as well as visually monitor traffic on the highways between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

“Drinking is a big problem on these roads,” Reagan said. Not to mention speeding and illegal passing, he added.

“There are a lot of commuters from Addy, Chattaroy, Chewelah, Colbert, Deer Park and Riverside who may have dinner and drinks in town (Spokane) and then drive home,” he said.
