The sweet smell of Elmer’s Glue will be wafting down the halls at the Washtucna School District again Aug. 31. That’s the first day of class for the 1998-99 school year. Parents are reminded that class begins at 8:09 a.m., and are asked not to send their children to school before 7:45 a.m. The final bell will ring at 2:56 p.m.
FERRY COUNTY
Curlew
School buses will be running again Monday in the Curlew School District. Getting a jump on the school year, the district had registration Aug. 17-19. New students to the district must have proof of immunization before attending.
GRANT COUNTY
Moses Lake
The Grant County Sheriff’s Department is looking for a Tennessee man who allegedly bilked a local man out of $3,000 last week. Daniel Jones of Knoxville is accused of posing as a pole builder with the Moses Lake office of “C and A Contractors.” He supposedly contracted with a Moses Lake man for a $6,000 pole building, which included a $3,000 materials deposit.
When Jones did not begin construction as promised, the investigation began. Jones is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, 235 pounds, about 20 years old with short red hair and several tattoos on his arms and stomach. He was last seen driving a mid-‘90s dark blue Mazda pickup with Tennessee plates. Anyone with information is urged to call the Sheriff’s Department at 1-800-572-0119.

Davenport
Marking its 61st year, the Lincoln County Fair opens Thursday. New this year is the FFA Tractor Driving Contest in which young farmers will negotiate an obstacle course. Those who want to enter animals, foods, sewing projects, artwork and photography exhibits are urged to obtain a premium book. They are available at all county post offices. Also planned are a rodeo, bull-a-rama, carnival and live entertainment by the Randy Shaw Band.

Metaline Falls
To most, it’s Labor Day weekend, but to residents of Metaline Falls, Sept. 5 and 6 will be known as the “Affair on Main Street.” A free family event, the Affair includes clowns, cancan dancers, local performers, and craft and food booths. A classic car meet also is planned, as are train rides on the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions Excursion Train and a performance by the Wenatchee Youth Circus at the Selkirk High School football field.

Jamie R. Meenach, daughter of Robyn and Hal Meenach of Valleyford and a 1996 Freeman High School graduate, has been awarded $2,400 in scholarships from Washington State University. A student in the college of agriculture and home economics, Meenach serves as herds manager for the Student Swine Co-op and as secretary for the Block and Bridle Club. The former Animal Sciences Freshman of the Year, Meenach is currently a junior majoring in animal sciences.

Colville’s Ale & Art is seeking entries into its annual fine art show. A juried event, Ale & Art shows off a broad range of stylistic interpretations and mediums. A ground-breaking ceremony for a new aquatic center is scheduled for 2 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Military Hill pool site. The ceremony will recognize pool donors Ed and Mary Schweitzer and mark the beginning of a partnership between the school district, which will own the pool, and the city, will manage it.

The Coeur d’Alene Inn will begin displaying works by artists from North Idaho, Eastern Washington and Western Montana. The idea was inspired by artwork in the Skamania Lodge in the Columbia River Gorge, general manager Steve Wilson said. The focus will be on art typical of the Inland Northwest. The council will pick jurors to choose which art to display, and will produce a catalog of works for sale. The Idaho Public Utilities Commission is conducting a public hearing today on a GTE proposal to raise residential phone rates by $2.85 per month. The increase, which also would increase single-line business rates by $1.35 per month, is being proposed so GTE can lower the rate it charges long distance companies for use of its system. The hearing begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Jansen Engineering Building at the corner of Sixth and Line streets.

Applications are being accepted for chief of police after the resignation of Don Oeleis became official today. Oeleis, chief for nine years, cited personal reasons for resigning, Osburn Mayor Bob Mcphail said. Officer Rick Dolson will handle the office until a new chief is found. The city will close the application process Sept. 4.

The third annual Combined Campaign Telethon is looking for local talent for the October event. Entry deadline is Sept. 15 and participants must know the length and content of their performance.
