Good thing he kicks for a living

An Italian league soccer player, obviously not used to using his hands, made a bad throw that caused a water balloon to injure two children riding in a car in Naples.

“We were throwing balloons at each other and I was trying to hit my teammates on the (hotel room) balcony, but the balloon ended up in the streets and hit a car,” said Fabio Galante of Inter Milan.

Could he be the Mitch Williams of European soccer?

Studying up for the NFL

Lots of people with nothing better to do are holding their collective breath in Columbus, Ohio, all because a certain All-American linebacker is taking three summer-school courses that will determine whether he can play college football this season.

Ohio State star Andy Katzenmoyer is tackling golf, music and AIDS awareness, separately, of course.

The linebacker needs to pump his grade-point average to 2.0 in order to be eligible this season, and a lot is riding on whether he makes it.

Ohio State is ranked No. 1 in the nation in preseason polls, and one of the bigger reasons is Katzenmoyer, last year’s Butkus Award winner.

Do we want to know what this man has declared for a major?

It’s great to be young and idealistic, Part I

Ricky Williams turned down millions as a probable top-five pick in the NFL draft to return to the University of Texas Longhorns and play this season under new coach Mack Brown.

“In the NFL, everyone is trying to step on everyone else to get a starting position and make more money,” Williams said. “It’s survival. It’s all business. In college, it’s your last chance to just play and have fun. I’m a kid. I want to keep being a kid.”

Al Lopez, who turned 90 last week, played with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, spent 19 years as a major league catcher and is the oldest living member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Lopez said he would have done it all for free.

“There I was in the big leagues,” he said of his first major league job in 1928. “I would’ve done it just to wear the uniform.”

Lopez went on to catch more games than any other player in major league history, setting a record that stood for more than 40 years.

The NFL gourmet

Former USC lineman Tony Boselli, now with the Jacksonville Jaguars, is 6 feet 7, so it’s logical that when McDonald’s named a burger after him, it would be big. The $1.99 Boselli Burger consists of three hamburger patties on a big bun topped with American and Monterey Jack cheeses, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes and onions.

It will be sold only in north Florida and south Georgia.

And not where your dietician can watch you eat it.

Non-millionaires need not apply

Want to join the new Nantucket Golf Club on the Massachusetts island? Membership goes for $300,000 and annual dues run about $6,500. Carts are not allowed and a caddie costs $40 a bag - before tips.

The last word …

“I went to church the other day to pray for our pitchers, but there weren’t enough candles.”
