Resignation Opens Spot On Cheney School Board

Amy Scribner Staff writer

Cheney school board member Thomas Best has resigned from his position as director for District 5.

Best, who served on the board for three years, will leave to devote more time to his Spokane Valley metal fabrication and design company.

The district will look to fill the position by the middle of September, said Superintendent Phil Snowdon.

Applications for the position must be submitted by Sept. 9. Candidates must live in District 5 and be registered voters.

The district will interview applicants Sept. 16 and appoint a new member at its regular Sept. 23 meeting. For information about district boundaries and applications, call the superintendent’s office at 235-6205.

Exchange students share culture

Lee and Diana Kvalheim of Spokane welcomed a new daughter this month. But they get to keep her for only a year.

The Kvalheims are hosting an exchange student through the Youth for Understanding program. Carolina Gonzalez Pena of Mexico will spend a year at Ferris High School sharing her culture and learning about life in the United States.

YFU, established in 1951, is one of the world’s largest nonprofit international exchange organizations, said volunteer Denise Foster. About 4,000 U.S. families open their homes to YFU international students each year.

Ferris orchestra invited to Oregon

The Ferris High School chamber orchestra was selected from a record number of audition tapes to perform at the Northwest division of the Music Educators National Conference. The conference takes place next February in Portland and will include groups from six states.

“This is an extraordinary honor very few groups receive,” said Principal Jon Bentz.
