Five years ago: The Bosnian Parliament ordered President Alija Izetbegovic back to talks on ending 17 months of war with demands to squeeze more territory for the Muslim-led government.

One year ago: After nearly a year of legal challenges, California’s affirmative action ban, Proposition 209, became law. U.S. troops became more deeply embroiled in a violent power struggle among Bosnian Serbs, firing tear gas and warning shots to fend off rock-hurling Serb mobs.
