Popular Painter

Vincent van Gogh, shown in a self-portrait painted in 1888, is a very popular guy. More than 600 people lined up Sunday for passes to a show of 70 van Gogh paintings that will open in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 4, more than a month away. Some had been standing in line since 6:20 a.m., waiting for the National Gallery of Art to open at 11 a.m. Museum officials are issuing 300 advance passes for each half-hour until the van Gogh show closes Jan. 3. Passes issued at the gallery are free; they also are available through Ticketmaster for $4. The paintings are being loaned by Amsterdam’s van Gogh museum, which is shutting down Tuesday for renovation.
