All That Glitters Is Gold

The FBI returned a gold crown that could be almost 3,000 years old to the Peruvian Embassy on Monday. Peruvian Ambassador Ricardo V. Lucas, right, accepted the crown from FBI special agent David Knowlton, left. The cylindrical headdress, illegally smuggled from Latin America, was made by the Chavin people who flourished in the northern highlands of Peru 2,500 years before the Spanish conquest. The FBI retrieved the crown in a Miami undercover operation four years ago. In 1997, two men were arrested in Philadelphia, pleaded guilty to smuggling and were sentenced to nine months each; the FBI still is seeking another man, a former diplomat from Panama.
