Ex-Cougars A.D. Jankovich Takes Interim Csun Post
Sam Jankovich, former Washington State University and University of Miami athletic director and New England Patriots chief operating officer, was hired Tuesday as interim A.D. at Cal State Northridge.
University president Blenda J. Wilson said Jankovich, 64, who has worked as a sports management consultant in recent years, will serve as athletic director for the remainder of the school year.
Wilson said a search committee has been appointed to replace former athletic director Paul Bubb on a permanent basis.
Bubb resigned after Cal State Northridge women’s basketball coach Michael Abraham was charged with selling cocaine.
Abraham and senior associate athletic director Judy Brame also submitted their resignations around that time.
Jankovich, who lives in Hayden Lake, Idaho, is scheduled to work at least through June 30, 1999, or until a permanent candidate is selected.
Jankovich will be paid from a base annual salary of $112,008, working out to $9,334 per month, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.
Jankovich said he isn’t interested in being the permanent athletic director.
Serious discussions between Wilson and Jankovich began two weeks ago after Charles Reed, chancellor of the California State University system, spoke with Jankovich.
Reed has known Jankovich for 15 years, dating back to their days in Florida. Reed headed Florida’s university system when Jankovich was at Miami.
Jankovich was athletic director at WSU from 1976-83 and at Miami from 1983-90. From 1990-92, he was CEO of the Patriots.
