The Othello Chamber of Commerce and Reichert’s Showhouse invite everyone to showings of “The Wizard of Oz” on Saturday. Free tickets can be obtained from participating local merchants for the 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. shows. Popcorn will cost moviegoers a can of food, to be donated to the local food bank.

Six Republic High School students were rewarded for their hard work recently with straight As. Those earning a 4.0 grade-point average include seniors Lisa Campobasso, and Lucy Wilson; juniors Tami Keyser and Kristoffer Krohn; and sophomores Claire Payne and Katharina Pierce.

More Grant County folks are taking the bus than ever before. The Grant County Transit Authority says 12,485 rode the bus in October - a new record. The October tally was especially encouraging to officials because the seasonal Grand Coulee Dam route to see the laser light show had ended.
LINCOLN COUNTY
Harrington
A local production of “The Sound of Music” is scheduled this weekend. Put on by K/P Productions, the cast of Lincoln County residents will perform Thursday through Sunday. Metaline Falls
Lehigh Portland Cement Co. has been issued an order by the state to clean up a site contaminated with cement kiln dust. The company will have to backfill the low-lying area, which fills with water and that enters nearby streams. The site is between state Highway 31 and Sullivan Creek in Metaline Falls.
SPOKANE COUNTY
Colbert
The music and drama department of Northwest Christian Schools, 5104 E. Bernhill Road, will put on several performances of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” this Saturday and Dec. 12 and 14 at 7 p.m. and Sunday and Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. A dinner theater performance is planned Monday at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5, $3 for students, and $18 for the dinner theater. A Christmas tour of the Keller House and Museum in Colville is planned. Decorated with a quilting theme, the historic home also sports a mitten and sock tree. Visitors are invited to decorate the tree with mittens and socks, which will be donated to local food banks. The tour is set for Saturday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Sunday from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Pullman
The Pullman Teen Center is taking donations of nonperishable items for the local food bank. The following items are needed: Canned fruits, tuna, vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, stews, juices and evaporated milk. Donations can be dropped at the center at 115 N.W. State St., Room 101, or at the Parks and Recreation Office, 325 S.E. Paradise, Pullman.

St. Maries
St. Maries fire crews responded to Heyburn school after midnight Nov. 22 when the building’s boiler system malfunctioned. A patrol officer noticed heavy smoke pouring from the stacks. The officer said the school’s kitchen seemed to be filled with smoke. Most of the smoke was confined to the mechanical room and no damage was incurred.

Priest Lake
Priest Lake Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Christmas Lighting Contest. Entries will be contacted to set a date for judges to view their homes. Judging will take place Dec. 15-23. The Coeur d’Alene Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the 1999 Leadership Coeur d’Alene Program. Moscow
University of Idaho staff psychologist Debra Goldfine and psychologist Charles Morrison conducted a study on student Internet use and addiction this fall. The study of 264 students found that 2.8 percent of the students believed their Internet time was interfering significantly with their lives. Fifty-three percent said e-mail was their top reason for logging on, while 30 percent said they used the Internet primarily for class assignments, research and communicating with professors. Goldfine and Morrison hope to conduct a follow-up random sampling of all UI students.

Mullan
The Mullan Chapters of Students Against Drunk Driving and the high school Pep Club will hold a food drive during the Silver Valley Basketball Tournament Friday and Saturday. The food drive will benefit the Community Action Agency/Shoshone Food Bank. People who bring a donation will be given a raffle ticket for raffles between games and at halftime.

Libby
Memorial Gym will be open for the Festival of Trees Friday and Saturday after being closed last month over concerns of asbestos in floor tiles. Testing showed that the asbestos exists in small quantities and in a form that is unlikely to be released into the air where it could become a health hazard. Additional testing of air and dust samples detected no asbestos. The facility is now administered by the county rather than Lincoln County Campus of Flathead Valley Community College.
