Elected Officials’ Raises Up For Input

From Staff

Do the state’s political leaders, legislators and judges deserve pay raises next year?

The 16-member panel that will decide that question, the Washington Citizens Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials, wants to hear from the public during a series of hearings across the state.

The commission, created to take the politically sensitive issue out of the hands of legislators and the governor, struggled to find people to comment on the issue during the last round of hearings in 1997.

As a result, the panel scheduled next year’s hearings at different times of the day and evening, as well as two Saturday hearings, to give people as many opportunities as possible.

Any raises granted would take effect 90 days after the last hearing.

Public testimony is requested at the following hearings:

March 15 at the Everett Inn in Everett.

March 29 at The Heathman Lodge in Vancouver.

April 10 at the Doubletree Hotel in Wenatchee.

April 26 at the Best Western Airport Executel near SeaTac.

May 22 at the Ramada Inn in Spokane.
