The future of Lakeside basketball looks suspiciously like the past.

Freshman Janell Gibson hit a 15-foot baseline jumper with 6 seconds left and classmate Jen Barcus added 7-of-11 shooting from the floor as the Eagles opened their season with a 48-46 non-league win over St. George’s at Nine Mile Falls.

Lakeside, the defending State 2A champion, is riding a 25-game winning streak. St. George’s finished in third place at last year’s State B Tournament.

Barcus added six rebounds. Dragons post players Katie DePonty and Alyssa Henley combined for 33 points. DePonty scored 12 in the second half.

Tasha Swinney stole the ball with 8 seconds left then hit two free throws after being fouled as the visiting Vikings defeated the Scotties.

Freeman led 44-34 in the third quarter before the Vikings scored 13 consecutive points during a 3-minute blitz.

VC, which didn’t play a varsity schedule last year, snapped an eight-game losing streak. Kristi Plummer had 14 rebounds for Reardan.
