In 1941: Japanese warplanes attacked the home base of the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, an act that resulted in America’s entry into World War II.

In 1987: 43 people were killed in the crash of a Pacific Southwest Airlines jetliner in California after a gunman apparently shot a fellow passenger and the two pilots.
