CV Opens With A Convincing Win
Veterans Blair Alderman and Kyle Bush wrestled to big wins as defending champion Central Valley defeated visiting Mt. Spokane 48-24 in a Greater Spokane League opener on Thursday.
Alderman, fourth place at state last year at 168 pounds, pinned Bobby LaBelle in the second round at 190. Bush (122) earned a technical fall over Paul Evenson. Bush was second at district last year at 108.
Seniors Anthony Shivers (135) and Brandon Hunt (275) had two of CV’s other four pins.
Ryan Dunford (168), Robert Smith (178) and Joe Merek (115) had pins for Mt. Spokane.
CV finished 9-0 last year while Mt. Spokane was 0-9.
Elsewhere, defending state champion Travis Pascoe, wrestling two weights up at 190, notched a second-round pin in Gonzaga Prep’s 45-18 victory at Ferris.
G-Prep placed second last year. Ferris shared third place with Mead and University.
Prep had four other pins, including one from Sean Malone (148), who was sixth at state last year. Daryl Gardner (135) of Ferris, a returning district placer, defeated regional returner Rudy Cavasier 9-5. Another Saxons district placer, Aaron Sedler (215) defeated regional veteran Doug O’Coyne 5-1.
U-Hi opened with five pins and rolled to a 48-24 win at Rogers.
U-Hi’s Tommy Owen (115) earned a 20-3 technical fall over Will Jesse, scoring all 20 points in one round. Brian Piper (178) of Rogers trailed Gordon Moore 7-3 but earned a pin with 37 seconds left.
Noah Vigil (275) avenged a previous loss to Josh Powers with a first-round pin as Mead defeated visiting Shadle Park 58-21.
Mead had seven pins, including freshman Russ Larkin (101) and sophomore Kyle Matson (115).
Paul White (122) and Dan Harris (129) pulled out late victories to cap North Central’s 37-21 win at Lewis and Clark.
White defeated J.D. Nichols 11-10 on a two-point stalling call with no time left. Harris had a third-period takedown to edge Nick Warrick 4-3.
Junior hockey
Keith Tobiason scored three goals and dished out a pair of assists, but that couldn’t prevent the visiting Spokane Braves from dropping a 7-6 Koontenay International Junior Hockey League game to Rossland.
