WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

Despite giving all union employees a 3 percent raise, the city’s annual budget is expected to decrease next year. The City Council recently unveiled a $6,952,081 budget for 1999. The current budget is $7,533,421. The city also plans to hire another firefighter at a cost of $26,638 and improve parks to the tune of $25,000.

Ferry County Curlew

Local school superintendent Dave Iverson is looking for ways to curb deficit spending. Iverson recently prepared worksheets for the Curlew School Board showing members how much each program dips into the district’s general fund. The analysis shows all programs are going over their funding limits.

Grant County Royal City

A 25-unit housing complex is being planned for the Royal Slope area. The complex is a cooperative effort between the County Housing Authority and Royal Slope Farm Labor Housing Corporation. Hoping to provide shelter for migrant farm workers who often camp in tents and cars during apple harvest, the project will be financed by block grants and tax credits. Lincoln County Davenport The Davenport School District changed its head lice policy, so that kids can return to class when lice are gone. The district has had several outbreaks and checks all students each Tuesday for nits. Six students were sent home with lice last week.

Pend Oreille County Cusick

Local youngsters are learning the joy of reading through First Book. A nonprofit program, it secures donations of books for children not able to afford them. Barnes and Noble of Portland recently donated a box of books to the effort. Anyone wishing to donate can send a tax-deductible gift to First Book, c/o Bernice Shivley, 1482 Green Road, Newport, WA 99159.

Spokane County Spangle

The Bank of Fairfield’s Spangle branch is holding a food drive through Friday. Bring in three nonperishable food items and pick a surprise gift from the grab basket. Donations are accepted weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Stevens County Chewelah

The Colville Valley Partners of Habitat for Humanity have stepped up their construction schedule. The house at 408 N. Kruger in Chewelah is nearly complete with paint, electrical and plumbing projects wrapping up. Crews work on Wednesdays and Saturdays, volunteering their time to help a family in need have a home.

Whitman County Pullman

Jeremy Henley, son of Randy and Nancy Henley of LaCrosse, has been selected president of the Interfraternity Council at Washington State University. A marketing major, Henley is president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He will take over his new position as top Greek leader of 26 fraternities at WSU after winter break.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

The Idaho Community Foundation is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations in Benewah County. Grants of up to $5,000 will be made for programs that benefit Idaho residents and communities. The foundation is also seeking funding proposals from North Idaho for projects that enhance learning for K-12 students. For more information, call the Idaho Community Foundation at (800) 657-5357.

Bonner County Sandpoint

For the first time in several years, the Priest River Chamber of Commerce will not sponsor a residential and commercial Christmas lighting contest this year. The chamber is asking residents who decorate their homes to phone their location to the chamber for a map for those who would like to take a tour of holiday decorations in the community.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Boundary County School District 101 board of trustees will meet in regular session at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the junior high cafeteria. Kootenai Tribe member Velma Bahe and Ned Warnick of Design West will speak at the meeting.

Kootenai County Rathdrum

A financial aid workshop for college-bound students and their parents will discuss grants, workstudy programs and loans on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Lakeland High School commons area. The program will explain the Free Application for Federal Students Aid form and teach students how to maximize financial aid opportunities. Latah County Genesee

Genesee wheat and barley grower Keith Kinzer has been selected president of the Idaho Grain Producers Association. Kinzer’s one-year term began at the end of the 42nd annual convention Nov. 17 in Idaho Falls.

Shoshone County Kellogg

Registration for North Idaho College evening classes in Shoshone County will be Jan. 4 at Kellogg High School from 5:30-7 p.m. Students may also register by calling (208) 769-3436. Seven evening classes will be offered in Shoshone County, five being interactive video and available to high school students as well. Students residing in Shoshone County must obtain a certificate of residency from the County Clerk’s office. All Shoshone County libraries have information on classes offered spring semester. Lincoln County Libby

GED testing will be at 9 a.m. Monday in room 116 at the Lincoln County Campus in Libby. For more information or to register for the test, contact Andrea Huisentruit at (406) 293-2721.
