ADAMS COUNTY Othello

The Othello Huskies are top dogs in state 2-A football after dropping Elma 53-21 last weekend. Quarterback J.B. Bradford, taking snaps for the first time after breaking his leg in September, tossed a spiral to Ruben Pruneda for a 10-yard touchdown in the final minutes. Quarterback Isaac Jahns played most of the game.

FERRY COUNTY Republic

Roadwork on Sherman Pass has ended for the season. Washed out by the May 26 floods, the pass between Republic and Kettle Falls has been under construction for several months. Work on Graves Mountain Road to Barney’s Junction will be finished next summer.

GRANT COUNTY Coulee City

Marilyn Wadena, 56, was charged with the Dec. 2 murder of her live-in boyfriend, Michael Jeffrey, 49. Wadena, who alleges Jeffrey had been abusing and raping her for three days prior to the stabbing, admitted she placed a knife between the mattresses of their bed and planned to kill him. Jeffrey died of a single stab wound to the chest. Wadena’s bail has been set at $100,000.

LINCOLN COUNTY Edwall

The drama of the first Christmas will highlight Christian Heritage School’s Christmas program at 7 p.m. Thursday in the school gym. Grades K-12 will perform vocal selections from “Christmas Past, Present and Future.” Kindergarteners will be dressed as animals from the stable.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport

The Cusick woman accused of embezzling up to $1,900 from the local Little League fund pleaded guilty in Superior Court last week. Debra Leeann Beltran, 41, agreed to one count of second-degree theft. A second count was dropped in exchange for a guilty plea. The prosecutor will seek a term of 45 days in jail.

SPOKANE COUNTY Spokane

A proposal to replat 20 Westwood Hills home sites near 21st Avenue and Scenic Boulevard goes before the city hearing examiner Tuesday at 9 a.m. on the second floor of City Hall. Developer George Thompson has agreed to provide a 10-foot easement between lots to replace an old trolley trail on the undeveloped land.

STEVENS COUNTY Cedonia

The Colville Chapter of The Compassionate Friends will hold a candle lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. today for grieving parents to remember children they’ve lost. The event is at the Cedonia Community Church near Hunters.

WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman

Hoping to deter Christmas tree thieves who chop down young evergreens on campus and around town, Washington State University and the city parks workers have been “marking” the trees. Trees have been sprayed with a mixture of oil, and essence of skunk or coyote urine. The stink becomes unbearable when the tree is taken indoors and warms up.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries

Donations for the St. Maries Trees of Sharing will be accepted until Thursday. They will be distributed with the Elks Community Christmas Baskets Friday and Saturday. Trees of Sharing are located in Harvest Foods, Archie’s IGA and the Forest Service office lobby. People interested in helping distribute baskets can contact Bob Marzulli at (208) 245-2218.

BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry

Boundary County commissioners will hold a public hearing Jan. 6 to take comments on a proposed zoning and subdivision ordinance. Copies of the ordinance are available for review at the Boundary County Library or the county Planning and Zoning Office in the courthouse. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the main courtroom of the courthouse.

KOOTENAI COUNTY Hayden Lake

Lake City High School students volunteered at the Kootenai Humane Society Dec. 8 and 11. At the humane society, students learned about animals that were mistreated, abused and forgotten. This is one of several projects of LCHS students to learn about life and the community.

LATAH COUNTY Moscow

Former Vandals John Selberg, Harold Gibson and C.J. Pederson will interview Wednesday through Friday for the position of University of Idaho alumni director. Pederson has served as president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau in Waco, Texas. Selberg has been a member of the UI Alumni Association board of directors since 1994 and is a senior analyst at George G. Sharp in Alexandria, Va. Members of the Rose Lake Masonic Temple will bring back the tradition of the yule log at a holiday celebration Friday at the temple from 5-7 p.m. Activities will also include hay rides and caroling by a barber shop quartet. Santa will also make a visit.

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby

The work of Libby High School students was shown at the Project Impact summit in Washington, D.C., this week. Their six-minute video describes where Lincoln County is located, the natural disasters that have hit the area and how the county has responded. The students plan to produce two more videos for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which heads Project Impact.
