* Get creative … anything goes: The 1998-99 Our Generation Get Creative writing/illustrating contest is officially open.

Send us your poetry, short stories, whimsical thoughts, doodles or illustrations (hand-drawn or computer-generated) and a 100-word or fewer description of your work telling us what it is and what inspired you to produce it.

Also include your full name, age, school, home phone and address. The contest is open to teenagers in grades 9-12.

If we really like your work we’ll publish it in Our Generation in 1999 and pay you for it. We’ll also publish on our soon-to-be up and running Our Gen Web site as many of the entries as we can.

* Free samples alert! If you’re the kind of person who never passes up the opportunity to try free samples at the grocery store or from the pretzel shop in the mall, you might be interested in this.

The Spokesman-Review is looking for new members for its reader food panel. (Yes, teenagers are eligible. Why else would we be telling you?) The panel meets one evening each month (usually the second Wednesday) to taste new supermarket products and to compare different name brands of the same item.

The only qualifications are a fondness for food and friendly conversation.
