East Adams Rural Hospital District ambulance crews in Lind, Washtucna and Ritzville will soon be equipped with automated external defibrilators. The hospital district was awarded a grant from the Washington State Department of Health to pay for the machinery.

Demand for blood during the accident-ridden holiday season has warranted a string of blood drives in Grant County. Folks in Ephrata can donate Dec. 23 at the local recreation center. The WSU Cooperative Extension will offer a workshop titled “Cost of Production” at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Old Town Hall. Farmers will learn how to maximize profits and make a market plan.

The Pend Oreille County WSU Cooperative Extension is pleased to announce its newest contributor, Carol Mack. Mack, who works part-time for the county soil conservation district, will present several soils and growing workshops through the extension. Mack’s specialty is watershed education.

The city’s 1999 budget has $95,000 earmarked for Y2K contingency plans, meaning less money for other projects. City Financial Director Sheila Creekmore said the budget is more conservative because of possible Y2K problems. By comparison, repairs slated for Colville Avenue are expected to cost $100,000.

A family narrowly escaped flames as their new log home burned to the ground last week. Phillip Adams, 15, awoke to a smoke-filled room and alerted his brother and disabled parents. His mother and brother jumped from the second-story window, while he and his father made it out the front door. The fire started near the boy’s computer printer, officials said.

According to Police Chief Ted Weatherly, the federal government has approved the city’s request for a $225,000 community policing grant to bolster plans for beat cops in busy student areas. The money will allow the city to increase the number of cops working on College Hill, where a riot broke out last spring.

St. Maries
The Idaho Transportation Department ceased work for the winter on State Highway 3 this week. Work on the $5.5 million road widening and straightening project will begin again in the spring, when one lane of the two-lane road will be rerouted to the Meadowhurst detour road.

Sandpoint
The Chamber Ambassadors Members of Sandpoint are accepting applications from nonprofit organizations until 5 p.m. Dec. 31 for $10,000 in grant funds. Organizations must benefit the local community and have goals compatible with those of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber. The group recommends that applicants seek from $100 to $1,500. The University of Idaho College of Education has received a $375,000, 3-year grant from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation to underwrite the training of Idaho teachers seeking national board certification. Two candidates take two semesters of class work and must have a baccalaureate degree, state certification and three years of teaching experience. Candidates continue teaching as they pursue national board certification.

The city of Kellogg recently received $1,100 from an Idaho Department of Lands grant. The money will be used to help fund the planting of 28 trees along Cameron Avenue. The Idaho Department of Lands awarded $35,000 in community forestry grants statewide, with more than $10,000 going to North Idaho projects.

Montana high schools will vote Jan. 18 on the Montana High School Association’s proposal to switch girls basketball and volleyball seasons. Basketball is played in the fall, with volleyball in the winter. The proposed switch would have boys and girls basketball season running concurrently beginning with the 2000-01 school year.
