Nc Students Exceed Fund-Raising Goal

North Central High School students had set a goal of raising 10,000 necessity items for charities in the heart of the NC district.

They nearly quadrupled their goal.

“We weren’t surprised, we were overwhelmed,” said Momi Bowles, one of many teachers who helped coordinate the effort.

“I think as soon as (the students) started getting response from the business community, they just went from there,” she said.

Our Place, Ogden Hall and the Women and Children’s Free Restaurant were the recipients of 37,694 necessity items last week.

Local dental offices chipped in with toothbrushes, floss and paste, hotels donated boxes of shampoos and conditioners, and students themselves hit the pavement collecting non-perishable food items.

“I think they were overwhelmed with the power they had to ask and receive,” Bowles said.

She said NC students also knew they were helping some of their own.

“We have a lot of at-risk students, so the student awareness is greater. A lot of these items are going to go to some of our own students.”

The fund-raising effort was a part of the Groovy Shoes community effort. It’s a fund-raising community service project between Shadle Park and NC.

“The kids were really, really thoughtful,” Bowles said.
