Today’S Bowl Games

Music City Bowl

Alabama (7-4) vs. Virginia Tech (8-3) at Nashville, Tenn.

TV: 2 p.m. ESPN

Bowl records: Alabama 28-17-3; Virginia Tech 3-8.

Alabama: Mike DuBose has Crimson Tide back to a bowl after hugely disappointing 4-7 season last year. The Tide has a 10-0 record against Virginia Tech, but haven’t met Hokies since 1979.

Virginia Tech: Has improved steadily since Frank Beamer became head coach in 1987. The Hokies are one of 10 teams making a sixth consecutive bowl appearance this year.

Micron PC Bowl

North Carolina State (7-4) vs. Miami (8-3) at Miami

TV: 4:30 p.m. TBS

Bowl records: North Carolina State 8-8-1; Miami 11-11.

North Carolina State: Wolfpack defeated two BCS teams - Florida State and Syracuse. Torry Holt, who set single-season ACC records with 88 catches and 1,604 yards, was named ACC player of year. He’s the first wide receiver to win it since Duke’s Clarkston Hines in 1989. It was Hines whom Holt passed last week for ACC’s all-time receiving yardage mark (3,379).

Miami: Edgerrin James’ NFL stock rose with a 299-yard performance in 49-45 victory over UCLA. The 220-pound halfback finished the regular season with 1,416 yards rushing, a school record. The game will be played 20 miles from campus at Pro Player Stadium.

Alamo Bowl

Kansas State (11-1) vs. Purdue (8-4) at San Antonio

TV: 5:30 p.m. ESPN

Bowl records: Kansas State 3-3; Purdue 5-1.

Kansas State: The Wildcats’ loss to Texas A&M in the Big 12 championship game dropped them into this spot. Nebraska and Texas had already been invited to fill the other Big 12 spots in the Holiday and Cotton bowls. The Wildcats averaged 48 points per game, tops in the country.

Purdue: The Boilermakers defeated Oklahoma State 33-20 in last year’s Alamo Bowl. Quarterback Drew Brees, from Austin, completed 336 of 516 passes for 3,753 yards with 36 TDs. He holds school and Big Ten season records for attempts, completions, yards and TDs.
