Ex-Hoops Star Turns His Life Around
A former professional basketball star and recovered cocaine addict is going back to school - and trying to help other young athletes do the same.
Spencer Haywood was 19 when he led the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 1968. He dropped out of the University of Detroit to play in the American Basketball Association, which named him most valuable player and rookie of the year in 1970.
Haywood joined the NBA in 1970 but bottomed out in 1980 when the Los Angeles Lakers suspended him for drug abuse. His NBA career ended in 1983.
Haywood overcame the addiction and moved back to Detroit, where he formed the Spencer Haywood Foundation, a substance abuse prevention program. Now 49, he has resumed studies at the University of Detroit.
